The victim’s glasses were allegedly found in a South Dakota AG car that said it hit a deer

The South Dakota attorney general – who said he hit a deer after fatally striking a pedestrian last year – had the victim’s glasses inside his car, according to recently published interviews.

The state’s Department of Public Safety on Tuesday released tapes of investigators questioning Jason Ravnsborg about the September 12 crash that killed Joseph Boever, 55.

The footage shows how, during an interview on September 14, detectives told Ravnsborg that they discovered a broken pair of glasses on the front passenger floor of his vehicle.

In a second session on September 30, investigators again asked about the glasses, telling Ravnsborg they belonged to the victim.

“These are Joe’s glasses,” said an agent, referring to Boever. “So that means his face went through your windshield.”

Hearing this, Ravnsborg lowered his eyes and sighed deeply, before shaking his head, according to the pictures.

“I didn’t see these glasses until you showed them to me,” he said.

The officer told Ravnsborg that “the only way for them to get there is through the windshield”.

“His face was in your windshield, Jason. Think about it.

Ravnsborg claimed he didn’t see the glasses until investigators showed him – and he really didn’t realize he had hit a person at the time of the crash.

“I didn’t see it. I didn’t see anything,” Ravnsborg insisted. “I didn’t know it was human until the next day.”

An investigator replied that: “You think you had any idea it was anything other than a deer, though?”

“I just thought it was a deer.” Ravnsborg responded. “I do.”

After the crash, Ravnsborg told authorities he believed he plowed his 2011 Ford Taurus into a deer or other large animal while driving on US Highway 14 around 10:30 p.m.

He was returning home after a GOP fundraiser at Rooster’s Bar and Grill, where attendees were offered the chance to win a handgun engraved with then-President Trump’s name, according to the South Dakota website GOP.

The 44-year-old Republican was indicted in last week’s incident and faces three counts of reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle using a mobile electronic device and getting out of the lane.

Authorities said the evidence did not support more serious criminal rapes and that Ravnsborg was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Ravnsborg, who was elected for his first term in 2018, was distracted when he swerved on Boever, who was walking on the shoulder of the freeway, crash investigators said.

South Dakota House lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Ravnsborg on Tuesday, following the release of the interviews and other investigative documents.

Lawmakers argued in the impeachment resolution that Ravnsborg should be removed from office for “his crimes or misdemeanors in power which caused the death” of Boever.

Governor Kristi Noem, also a Republican, called on Ravnsborg to step down shortly before the impeachment resolution was tabled.

“Now that the investigation is closed and charges have been laid, I think the attorney general should resign,” she tweeted. “I have reviewed the material we publish, as of today, and I encourage others to review it as well.”

But that of Ravnsborg will not resign, according to his spokesman Mike Deaver.

“As a lawyer and lieutenant colonel in the army reserves, AG Ravnsborg has fought for the rule of law and personal freedoms and hopes he enjoys the same rights and courtesy,” said Deaver said in a statement.
