IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Gary Dolphin, playable announcer for the University of Iowa Men's and University Basketball Team and Hawkeye Football, was suspended "for an indefinite period" following comments made at the Iowa match against Maryland on Tuesday.
Hawkeye Sports Properties made the announcement Friday afternoon.
In Tuesday's coverage of the Iowa-Maryland men's basketball game, Dolphin called Marland's Bruno Fernando, a black, "King Kong".
Following the announcement of the suspension, Dolphin issued the following statement:
"During the broadcast, I used a comparison to try to describe a talented basketball player from Maryland, I have no intention of offending or denigrating the player. 39 full responsibility for my inappropriate word choice and offers him a sincere apology I wish every success to the players, coaches and supporters of Iowa Hawkeye at the beginning of the last season of the season.
