Team Blake | Worth the Wait (Grade: B) defeated Taryn Papa (Grade: A-) on “Little White Church” – Taryn saved by Blake | In rehearsal with Councilor Kane Brown, Blake advised WTW’s Mia to relax and warned Taryn that when she made up her mind about a note, she left flat out. I kinda thought it was WTW to lose – how to beat a three part harmony, right? On stage, Taryn came out swaying, spitting fire and oozing enough stage presence that her opponents seemed to be her backup singers. When they had their turn in the spotlight, as expected, their harmonies were divine, but only Mia’s voice really stood out. (At least I thought It was Mia?) Overall it was one hell of a fight, but if I hadn’t been able to get Mia through on her own, I would have given the victory to Taryn (who thanks to this save now heading for a four-way knockout).
Team legend | Tamara Jade (Grade: A-) defeated Olivia Reyes (Grade: B-) on “Hard Place” | Practicing with advisor Miguel, Tamara, a tower with four chairs and large blinds stands out, dazzled by the richness of her voice and her range. But according to John, she had too much vibrato. Olivia, meanwhile, gave what Kelly would have called stankface for days on end and performed with a level of commitment that couldn’t be underestimated. I would be really disappointed to see either go. When the spotlight fell on them, as John had predicted, they “blew up the roof.” Olivia was strong, but her inexperience showed, as Tamara started out strong and only got stronger. And when it came to pure firepower, it wasn’t a contest – this battle absolutely belonged to Tamara.
Kelly Team | Madeline Consoer (Grade: A-) defeated Eli Zamora (Grade: A) on “No one wants to be alone” | Ahead of the performance with Councilor Leon Bridges, Kelly revealed an infection had left her rocking. “I feel like I could be a really good supervillain,” she said. Or Captain Hook wouldn’t be a bad name for a songwriter. But we digress … Madeline admitted that she was out of her comfort zone, tackling the Christina Aguilera part of the duo. Eli, meanwhile, wowed his trainer by calling him “probably my most passionate singer.” On stage, Eli did not sing the song so much as live it. Madeline fired back, admirably, but I couldn’t take my ears (or eyes) from Eli. He was a vocal dynamo and is possibly the greatest showman of the season. Then Blake was amazed that despite how much Eli moved, he nailed every note. I was gutted that it had not been stolen or saved; Kelly dropped the much more interesting performer here.
Team Gwen | Payge Turner (Grade: B) defeated Lauren Frihauf (Grade: B +) on “If the World Ended” – Lauren stolen by John | In rehearsal with Julia Michaels, contestants admitted that it was very nerve-racking to play one of the singer / songwriter’s hits for her. Gwen warned Lauren not to sound “pinched,” and Julia pointed out that if she stepped away from the mic, part of the character of her voice was lost. Julia advised Payge to be careful not to lose the pauses in her voice – they let her uniqueness shine through. When it was time to go, Payge first reminded me of a musical theater singer – she spelled out the hell out of it. Although she continued to show great diversity and emotion, I had a feeling – incorrect, it turned out – that the victory would go to the younger and less experienced Lauren. She looked prettier and more vulnerable. No wonder Blake and John are both arguing over stealing Lauren.
Team Blake | Jus Jon (Grade: A-) defeated Payton Lamar (Grade: B-) on “Dancing With a Stranger” | Before the chair spun in the rehearsal room, Blake told his advisor that this would be his only pop-soul battle. After hearing Payton and Jus Jon practice a bit, Blake told Payton not to start in his head voice and then go to his chest voice – let it fly. As for Jus Jon, he needed not to dress the lines too much, according to his trainer. Sing these races, don’t go over them. At the moment of truth, Jus Jon came out with radio-ready sound: smooth and sexy and full of swagger. However, he looked nervous and stiff, at least at first. Payton was fine – she definitely has blowjobs. But his tone struck me as shrill. (Kelly thought it was pretty, so what do I know?)
Team legend | Bailey Rae (Grade: B +) defeated Sid Kingsley (Grade: A) on “Tennessee Whiskey” – Sid stolen by Kelly | Before I even heard Sid and Bailey rehearse, I told myself the battle was his to lose – his blind had been fair. This. Well. (Luckily for Bailey, Blake had already promised to steal it.) After the passage, Miguel suggested that Sid challenge himself to use more of his “mix” to get his voice out of the mud. (Yeah, I didn’t know what that meant either.) And John asked Bailey to sing a verse line an octave higher to make it really hollow. On stage, she did a great job unfurling her twang and stretching syllables as if they were chewing gum. But Sid was just in another league. He sang with an incredible, quite occasional growl and a slight sneer that reminded me of Billy Idol. Great battle. As good as Bailey was, I couldn’t believe John had let Sid go!
