If you ever wondered what a typical day in the life of our survivors looks like when they’re not fighting a Big Bad or defending their community against a horde of zombies, Sunday Walking Dead had your name written all over it. If you never I wondered that … Um, you probably didn’t like that episode, where Carol was making soup and Daryl fixing his bike.
Personally, I hollowed it out like a slice of full life. But then I could probably watch Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride knit mittens and have some fun. Either way, whether you love or hate “Diverged,” the details of what happened are below.
‘FEEL LIKE DARYL’ | As the hour began, Daryl and Carol were leaving Leah’s cabin with Dog after their big fight. Things remained cold between them, but Daryl still offered Carol her pocket knife to open her stuck water bottle. When their paths, as the title suggested, diverged, with Carol returning and Daryl snooping around a bit longer, Dog chose to follow her. “Good,” Daryl growled. Once home in Alexandria, Carol informed her four-legged companion that she really meant it when she told Daryl that she didn’t need an apology. “I know he meant what he said, and an apology is only a truce. It doesn’t solve anything ”- unlike belly rubs, she added.
Although Carol was desperate to help, Jerry couldn’t think of a single thing for her to do. But when her stomach growled, she had the brilliant idea of not only fixing the tattered scarf Dog had drawn her attention to, but also making soup. It didn’t matter that the rats were in the grain and the solar panels were out of control. “I’ll make it work,” she said. “You always do,” he replied. As soon as he got to work, Dog panicked in pursuit of a rat in the kitchen. Banishing him to Daryl’s quarters, she MacGyver had a mousetrap, because that’s exactly what Carol does – she makes it work.
“ YESTERDAY WASN’T MY BEST DAY ” | Searching for ingredients to replace the ones Dog had knocked over, Carol pulled out a bunch of walkers with the same ease you or I could sweep dust bunnies away. She then used Daryl’s knife to repair the solar panels in Alexandria. Why? Because there is nothing that Carol cannot do. Soon after, she let Dog return to the kitchen and promised him some leftovers if he was a good boy. She grabbed the rat too… and quickly let go, leading to a funny, if unlikely, storyline in which our fierce warrior sadly chased the thing away as if it were in a Tom and Jerry cartoon. When the rat finally rushed through a hole in the wall, she plugged it in with the scarf… just as the power turned off. Sigh. “There will be more sun tomorrow,” she said to Dog, “right, mate?”
That night, Carol reassured Dog that Daryl would be back. He always came back. “But I don’t, do I?” Should she just rush? she asked. Alas, Dog offered no bark of wisdom. Dog later woke Carol up in a panic. The rat was back in the kitchen. First, Carol drilled a hole in the wall to see if she could spot it. Then she stabbed the wall. Finally, she just tore the wall to shreds. When she had exhausted herself, she sat down on the floor, Dog gently stretched out beside her in the debris. The next day Jerry pulled over and quickly admitted he was watching Carol. When she came back without Daryl, Jerry had assumed that she might have needed an Ezekiel saying, “A friend is someone who thinks you are perfect even though everyone thinks you are broken.” What if his best friend just found out that he was broken later than everyone else? Ezekiel didn’t have a saying about it that Jerry knew. What would he say himself? she asked. Almost in tears, Jerry hugged her… as the rat walked away as if leaving a hotel.
‘ARE YOU KIDDING ME’ | While all of this was going on, Daryl’s bike collapsed. Fortunately, he quickly found a bunch of abandoned vehicles; these antlers are lousy with them, aren’t they? As he stood below one, looting it for parts, a walker inside moved, sending the precariously parked vehicle topple ominously in Daryl’s direction. . (You can watch below.) Needless to say, it wasn’t overwritten. Back on his bike, Daryl quickly found that he couldn’t do the repair without the knife overtaking him, Carol hadn’t returned. So he was riding his bike home when he ran into some camouflage-clad walkers and, through the more picky ones, got a bunch of supplies from their gear – including a new pocket knife.
When Daryl finally returned to Alexandria, Carol was simply giving up repairing the scarf; she had walls to fix now, anyway. What happened to you? they each asked upon seeing the disheveled state of the other. “You know,” Carol said, “as usual.” He didn’t want his soup or his knife back. But as showrunner Angela Kang recently told us – and plans for their spinoff suggest – their friendship was anything but kaput. So what did you think of “Diverged”? If nothing else, since he focused on well-established characters, you must like him better than “Splinter,” right?
