LOS ANGELES (AP) – The Weeknd angrily criticized the Grammy Awards, calling them “corrupt” after the pop star walked away with zero nominations despite several successes this year.
The three-time Grammy winner slammed the Recording Academy on Tuesday after being severely snubbed despite one of the year’s biggest albums with “After Hours” and being selected as a Super Bowl halftime performer. He also topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts with “Blinding Lights” and “Heartless”.
“The Grammys remain corrupt,” the singer said on Twitter. “You owe me, my fans and the transparency of the industry.”
The harsh words come less than a year after the ousted Recording Academy CEO accused the group that determines nominations in major categories of having conflicts of interest. and not engage in a transparent selection process.
Harvey Mason Jr., acting president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said earlier if he was surprised the Weeknd hadn’t won a single nomination. He said it was difficult to predict voters’ decisions.
“You know, there are so many nominations and there are only so many slots, it’s really hard to predict what voters are going to vote for in any given year,” he told the Associated Press. “I try not to be too surprised.”
After The Weeknd called the academy, Mason Jr. released a statement explaining that “unfortunately every year there are fewer nominations than the number of deserving artists.”
“We understand The Weeknd is disappointed not to be nominated. I was surprised and I can understand what he is feeling, ”said Mason Jr.
The Weeknd was not nominated for the Grammy Awards with Luke Combs, which set records on streaming services and topped the national charts. Morgan Wallen also had a successful year in country music, but he came away empty.
A group of young needle-moving female R&B artists also missed out on nominations, including Summer Walker, Teyana Taylor and Kehlani. The late rapper Juice WRLD, Brandy and Chris Brown have also been snubbed.
Justin Bieber won four nominations, but the singer also criticized the Grammys’ decision-making. He said the music for his fifth studio album “Changes” was mistakenly viewed as a pop album, rather than an R&B project.
Bieber thanked, saying he was “flattered” to have been recognized, but that being excluded from the R&B category was a mistake.
“I decided to make an R&B album,” he wrote on Instagram. “’Changes’ was and still is an R&B album. It is not recognized as an R&B album, which is very strange to me. “
Bieber was nominated in the categories of Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Duo / Group Pop Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Duo / Group Country Performance.
The singer said he loved pop music, but wanted to be respected for his work.
“I grew up admiring R&B music and wanted to create a project that would embody that sound,” he said. “That it is not put in this category seems weird, considering the chords to the melodies passing by the vocal style, passing by the hip-hop drums that were chosen, it is undeniably, undeniably an R&B album!”
