The 30-year-old Canadian singer has been making headlines in recent months for appearing in public with white bandages covering his face. What appeared to be bruises and scars was also visible around his eyes when he was wearing the bandages.
Fans were puzzled not only by the costume choice, but also by her facial modifications in the music video for her hit, “Save Your Tears,” which saw her cheekbones, jawline and more altered.
Now, ahead of his next Super Bowl halftime performance, The Weeknd – born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye in Toronto – has revealed the significance of the costume, which turned out to be prosthetics.

“The importance of the head bandage set reflects the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,” he told Variety.

Additionally, he said the bandages were part of a story he created for a character to accompany his album, “After Hours”.
As he appeared at events with more bandages and drastic visual changes, the looks were meant to show “progression and we watch the character’s storyline reach heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his story unfolds. keep on going.”

However, it looks like the lines may even be blurry for The Weeknd himself, as he said he “should ask” the character if he appears as said character during the interview.
