The White House is preparing candidates to replace press officer Sarah Huckabee Sanders. CBS News has learned from two sources close to the process. The White House has contacted some of them Thursday, shortly after the announcement of Sanders' departure and the possibility of undertaking talks as early as next week, sources said.

Several sources have put Melania Trump's deputy chief of staff and communications director at the top of the list of potential candidates, considering her as a serious candidate. Stephanie Grisham is well respected by the first couple and has impressed the president, sources said. Grisham was among the staff who worked on the president's 2016 campaign.

"The president likes it," a former White House official told CBS News.

Grisham started as a press officer for the campaign and became deputy press officer for the White House. She is a trusted advisor to the first lady.

Another potential candidate is Tony Sayegh, the deputy secretary of public affairs in the Treasury Department, who is stepping down as spokesman for Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. He is a former contributor to Fox News and Fox Business and has been credited for helping the government roll out the president's tax reduction plan.

Sayegh participated in a farewell party on Thursday night in Washington, which was attended by the White House and other officials, including Sanders and her husband. He was seen by revelers talking with Sanders.

Steve Cortes, a member of the president's Hispanic Advisory Council and CNN contributor, should also be subject to a security check (again) for the press officer. He has been considered for this post and for other communication posts at the White House in the past.

While Sanders' senior press officer, Hogan Gidley, will also be considered, White House officials told CBS News that they thought the next press officer would probably not be a press office candidate. the President. Gidley may, however, be appointed acting press officer.

Several sources say that the process is fluid and several other names are also being studied.
