A white Maryland legislator would have been confronted this week by fellow lawmakers and forced to apologize after allegedly calling one of the state's predominantly black counties a "northern district."
Delegate Mary Ann Lisanti – a Democrat representing Harford – reportedly spoke to a white colleague at the end of last month at an after-hours rally in an Annapolis cigar bar, during which she would have uttered this racial insult, according to the Washington Post.
"I'm sure everyone used it," said Lisanti, 51, in an interview with the newspaper.
The Post apparently confronted him earlier this month and asked him about his alleged use of the word.
"I do not remember," said Lisanti. "I do not remember much of this evening."
When asked if she had ever used this insult before, the second-term legislator said, "I'm sure to have it … I'm sure everyone used it." I used the word-f. I used the name of the Lord in vain.
Lisanti was again questioned Monday night about the incident – this time by members of Maryland's black legislative caucus. It was only then that she apologized.
"She apologized several times," Darryl Barnes (Prince George's) said in the mail. "She recognizes how much she has hurt so many caucus members and she hopes to repent."
Lisanti was in front of a group of Métis legislators when she made her remark about Prince George County. Last fall, she discussed his white colleague's campaign efforts, including knocking on doors in Prince George County, one of the richest black communities in the United States, according to the Post.
"There is no room in the House of Delegates for racial slurs – nor insults of any kind in society in general," said Speaker of the House, Michael E. Busch (D -Anne Arundel).
Lisanti did not respond to calls for comments on Tuesday, although she issued a statement that she would step down as chair of the House of Commons Economic Committee's Unemployment Insurance Subcommittee.
"I understand that the use of inappropriate and insensitive language is not acceptable under any circumstances," Lisanti said. "I am sorry for the harm I have done and will do everything in my power to help remedy this pain and regain the trust of my colleagues and constituents. I pray for forgiveness. "
