MILWAUKEE – The University of Wisconsin said Sunday that the wife and daughter of assistant basketball coach Howard Moore were killed in a car accident in Michigan.
Moore's wife, Jennifer, and her daughter, Jaidyn, were killed early Saturday in the accident on the M-14 highway in upper Washtenaw County Township, the department said.
"There are no words to describe how devastated we are for Howard and his family," said Wisconsin coach Greg Gard. "Our basketball program is an extremely close family and we are all in mourning."
Samantha Winchester, of Ann Arbor, was traveling west through the eastbound lanes of the Detroit Expressway, when she hit a car carrying the Moore family, said Lt. Darren Green of the Michigan State Police. The 23-year-old woman and Jaidyn died on the scene, the authorities said.
Moore suffered third-degree burns, but his injuries are not considered life-threatening, and his son, Jerell, was slightly injured, Green said. Both should recover.
"Howard is so much more than a colleague and a coach," Gard said. "He, Jen and their children are dear friends to everyone they meet. Their positivity and energy elevate those around them. Jen and Jaidyn will be sorely missed and we will be hugging each other, Howard and Jerell, as well as the whole family, bringing them love and support during this indescribable time. "
Moore, a native of Chicago, played in Wisconsin from 1990 to 1995 and was head coach at Illinois-Chicago before returning to his alma mater in the 2015-16 season.
"I know Howard since he's a student-athlete in Wisconsin and I've come to know his wonderful family over the years," said Sports Director Barry Alvarez. "He has always been an incredible representative of our sports department and a positive influence on everyone around him. We are truly heartbroken for his family and will do everything in our power to help him through this tragic time. Our prayers, our love and our support go to the Moore and Barnes family. "
