The ECG Move is, like almost all Withings products, a hybrid analog watch and a fitness tracker. The most notable feature of this time is the built-in ECG, which allows you to take rudimentary measurements of your heart's health while on the go. Until this week, there were not many smart ECG watches on the market. His presence here is therefore a major novelty, especially at this price.
Looks like someone brought a bike pump to an ordinary watch, with an inflatable, round and inflated design. The Swiss minimalism that defined Withings' previous watches has been modified in favor of something less formal, something more sympathetic. The 1955 Citroën DS and the Pompidou Center have a whimsical side. I mean that everything looks pretty French.
Despite a 38mm case, it looks much smaller on the wrist than other watches in its class. If, like me, you have beefier forearms, there is a slight risk that it looks a little ridiculous when you wear it with a t-shirt. It's definitely trying to incorporate it into this Swatch-shaped hole in your life, rather than supplanting this submariner that you normally wear.

The ECG Move is available in two different colors: black and gray, with a touch of yellow on the sub-number, or a more sober white and blue. Both come with a shiny silver bezel that serves as the third sensor for the ECG circuit, the other two being driven into your wrist. All three must touch the skin for the measure of your heart to work.
Taking an ECG is quite easy, just press the button on the right side of the case. (Watch fans will recognize him as a "pusher" for reasons that go without saying: it is not a crown). You then pinch one side of the watch with your fingers, with a little pressure, but not as hard as you would with a battery tester. The sub-number, which is normally used to follow your steps, turns into a countdown, with a countdown of 30 seconds for the end of the test.
Oh, and you have to put your arms on a table – which the tutorials do not explain clearly. In my original demo with the watch at CES, the test took place in full flight and lasted only 20 seconds. From now on, each test lasts 30 seconds. It is then loaded on your phone for further analysis and can also be sent to your doctor if you wish.
If there is one thing, it is that the use of the ECG requires that you constantly monitor your heart rate. With a device that provides continuous or even interval-based heart rate monitoring with an optical sensor, you do not need to think about it. Not to mention that you are more likely to think of your heart when it goes faster, which could give a distorted picture of your overall heart health.

Because the movement ECG does not have a digital display, there is not much you can do beyond checking the time and number of steps. On the one hand, it's a refreshing purity of form, especially since you have nothing to do to check the time on your wrist. On the other hand, Garmin's Vivomove HR, with its hidden digital display, is much more functional.
Another disadvantage is that the watch does not shine in the dark or has any form of backlight. This means that if you want to check the time in the middle of the night, you will have to reach your phone. The lack of something so basic is an irritation, especially if you are reluctant to use alarm clocks or smartphones to check the time during a busy evening.
What it lacks, however, means that Withings can boast of a measured battery life over the years. Or at least a year. The company says that on a single battery you will be able to use it for a year by taking two ECGs a day. It's an impressive statement, but for which we'll have to spend a little longer before we can be conclusive.
One thing that has become immediately apparent is the hardness of the ECG Move to count steps, probably to avoid suggesting that it's soft. My iPhone estimated that I had done about 5,000 steps, but the Move estimated that it was closer to 3,500. This is a significant disparity that will need to be subject to a further investigation, because I'm pretty sure I've done more than that.
Of course, I did not mention Withings / Nokia / Withings Health Mate, the company's leading companion app. By consolidating all your health data into one place, the information is easy to read and digest, with helpful graphs describing the state of your body. This is probably the best fitness software available, and I can not recommend it enough.

Withings is focused on sleep health. The ECG Move includes sleep tracking and a vibrating smart alarm. As on the jaws of the past, if the watch detects that you wake up shortly before the scheduled time of your alarm clock, it will buzz. If you are at the peak of a sleep cycle, it is best to be woken up to avoid feeling groggy a few minutes later.
For all the things that could be described as slightly less impressive than expected, there is a place where he really wins. The Apple Watch Series 4, with ECG, costs you $ 399 (£ 399), while the ECG Move costs £ 129.95 (£ 129.95). For a third of the price of an Apple Watch, you get a stylish hybrid fitness tracker with the same cardiac check capability.
There is always a tradeoff between having a constant heart rate monitor and the rare nature of an electrocardiogram. When you come to buy, you will have to decide whether you prefer a device that constantly monitors the progress of your heart, or a device that will provide you with better data, but only when you ask for it.
In Europe, it is available for purchase today, but those in the United States who want to try it will have to wait a little longer. The FDA has still not stirred its scepter and blessed the sale of the watch, which is expected to decline in the fourth quarter of this year. Hopefully, it will be available for purchase before the end of the holidays, just in time to keep you on the road to New Year's resolutions.
