It’s unclear where Miguel Andujar stands on the Yankees roster as Gio Urshela is expected to be recovered from off-season elbow surgery in time for opening day.
Still, Aaron Boone said the Yankees haven’t given up on Andujar, 26, who spent much of last season at the team’s alternate site in Scranton.
Asked about Andujar’s potential role, Boone replied, “Well, see.
“The thing about [Andujar] Nothing has changed as far as his talent goes, ” Boone said during a Zoom call from Tampa on Wednesday. “At his age, when technically he should be in his prime, the last two years he’s been injured and last year there weren’t a lot of regular hitters.
Andujar’s fall began when he suffered a shoulder injury in 2019 that required surgery. Urshela became the regular third baseman and Andujar didn’t do well a year ago when the Yankees tried to turn him into a utility player.
According to Boone, Andujar faces a similar task this spring, with work ahead at third base, as well as first base and left field.
After a lack of activity over the past two seasons, Boone said Andujar faced “a challenge”.
“He’s very talented, we love the person and the makeup,” Boone said of Andujar. “We just have to see it unfold… When opportunities arise as they inevitably usually do, you have to be able to take advantage of them and he has the talent to do it.
