ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The Yankees arrived in the Gulf of Mexico with the goal of overtaking the Rays during the AL East race.
They lost that chance, but to be able to go in the same boat where they arrived, the Yankees must play much better in several departments on Sunday than Saturday.
After winning the first of three games on Friday, the Yankees lost 7-2 to the Rays on Saturday against 25.025 at Tropicana Field.
Among the reasons for the loss, there is the error of throwing Gary Sanchez who led to a round in the sixth inning, Jonathan Holder unable to put the batters out with two outs in the round and Gleyber Torres getting caught in the second run. And they were lucky that Torres was not thrown to the plate in the fifth inning when he crossed a signpost from third baseman Phil Nevin.
The Yankees are now half-match in Sunday's third game and can not leave the Gulf Coast of Florida east of the east.
In search of his 249th career win, CC Sabathia was not included in the decision. In five innings, he allowed two runs and three hits. Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz added two points to their favorites with a three-run homer against Nestor Cortes Jr. in eighth place to seal the win.
Holder did not serve by losing two batters, he was ahead of 0-2 in the sixth inning, but Sanchez's pitching error was just as painful when the Rays, who wore the Devil Rays uniform, were scored twice to take a 4- 2 lead.
Garcia opened with a single left, stole second and went to third on Sanchez's low shot. Holder pulled out the next two batters in front of Guillermo Heredia on a full throw after beating 0-2. The incumbent beat Willy Adames, 0-2, and his ground ball to the left of the second goal was lined by second baseman DJ LeMahieu, but he was unable to score and Garcia scored.
With runners at first and second base, Ji-Man Choi put a bullet in the teeth of an offset that had left LeMahieu on the grass of the outside field on the right. He was playing the ball, but his long throw to first base was rebounding and Luke Voit could not pull him out of the field as Heredia scored in second place and gave the Rays a 4-2 lead.
LeMahieu's first goal in the sixth was the first of the Yankees since the ninth inning of Gio Urshela on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.
LeMahieu's second goal of the season tied the score at 2-2, followed by Yonny Chirinos, driving Voit into the left shoulder with a 0-1 shot timed at 95 mph. Voit threw his bat before reaching first base and the television cameras surprised Sabathia looking towards the field.
Brett Gardner's downfall was extended to 6-in-51 when his hard-hit striker allowed a double-play of 6-3. The Chirinos then hit Sanchez on the left wrist with a brittle ball before bouncing Torres.
Gleyber Torres' first single on a 0-2 pitch in the fifth inning was the first time the Yankees got the initial hitter from a run on a base. A hitter later. Torres passed the Nevin stop sign to score and reduce the Rays' lead to 2-1.
Clint Frazier, who was in a 2-for-21 (.095) slip, doubled in the center and it appeared that the Yankees would have runners in second and third place without defeat in front of Miguel Andujar. But Torres ignored or did not see Nevin's attempt to keep him in third and barely beat the home run.
Andujar extended his fall to 3-in-28 (.107) with a foul on the ground just to the left of Urshela who put the riders to the corner for Mike Tauchman. The first two throws of Chirinos against Tauchman, southpaw, came out of the striking area and the third went into a 4-6-3 double run.
Sabathia started the fourth inning with 58 shots and was forced to bypass Heredia's double in front of Urshela in diving at third base. Sabathia left Heredia in second place, removing Adames and Choi on regular balloons left and center, respectively.
