The author of the groundbreaking movie "Ball Four" died Wednesday as a result of a battle against a brain disease linked to dementia, according to friends of the family. The native of Newark, New Jersey, was in the Massachusetts home he shared with his wife, Paula Kurman, after weeks of palliative care. He was 80 years old.
