After an eruption in their first part of the Players Weekend series, the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers played a thriller on Saturday afternoon. Justin Turner's home run in round three is the difference for the Dodgers who took a 2-1 lead in the ninth.
After Joe Kelly and Pedro Baez allied for three scoreless innings, the relay was passed to Kenley Jansen for his first appearance since his stoppage and breakout at Dodger Stadium.
DiDi Gregorious has twice been at fault, his second attempt having resulted in a withdrawal of the stick to start the round. A bit of chaos ensues as the Yankees charge the bases behind a crowd of sweet contacts.
One of their players on the ground resulted in what was originally decided was eliminated in a game where Brett Gardner eliminated Max Muncy with his slide to second base. Gleyber Torres made his way home while Muncy writhed in pain on the floor but was sent back to third.
After the Yankees left the bases charged and suffered a 2-1 defeat, manager Aaron Boone said the team could protest the result. Mike DiGiovanna of L.A. Times:

This should be clarified … while Boone and Yanks plan to inquire with the league about this play, they probably have no formal protest. This would require a bad application of the rules. It was purely a judgment that required the referee to attribute the timeout.

Boone immediately came to the field to argue with the marble umpire, Gabe Morales, who seemed to explain that he had allowed the Dodgers enough time after the fall of Muncy. In the middle of this conversation, the Yankees challenged the outgoing call to second base.
The Dodgers simultaneously contested Gardner's slide because of contact with his hand. Their efforts were in vain and the replay canceled the call, leaving the bases laden. Jansen escaped by hitting Mike Tauchman and Gary Sanchez.
Last month, the Boston Red Sox played a game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to changes to their card. Pending a possible revision by the MLB, the Dodgers and Yankees have separated from the first two games of Players Weekend.
