Ladera Heights, California – A 102-year-old woman is forced to leave her home here, reports CBS Los Angeles.
Thelma Smith's family and friends meet after receiving a notice of eviction, obliging him to leave his home for nearly 30 years.
The owner of Smith intends to move his daughter to the residence where she is finishing law school.
Smith, a retired leader of a non-profit group, has lost most of her family over the years, including her husband, and the remaining family lives on the east coast.
Her family and friends say her options are limited to moving in with someone nearby or in an assisted living facility, which is hard to do with her fixed income.
"She could not afford it, she would need help from the county and other friends to support her in these places," said family friend Antonio Avelino.
"She did not accept the fact that after these many years, she has to leave," he said. "At this moment, it is the unknown that bothers him to settle elsewhere."
The Los Angeles Times notes that L.A's Rent Control Act provides assistance for the resettlement of the elderly and disabled. But Ladera Heights is an unincorporated section of Los Angeles County, located just outside the city limits, and the law does not apply to it.
Amy Johnson of CBS L.A. spoke to the owner.
"We know legally that you can send her away, but 102, do you want to fired a 102-year-old woman?" Johnson asked.
He responded by saying, "Do you want to take care of your child?"
"The only thing I can say is that I tried to lead a good life, I never wanted to hurt anyone," Smith said.
Smith must leave the house before June 30th.
In the meantime, his friends are looking for other places to live in the area.
