The Mets’ flirtation with Theo Epstein was short-lived.
In the search for a team for a new president of baseball operations, owner Steve Cohen spoke with Epstein and a mutual agreement was reached that he was not the right person, according to a source at the ‘industry. The Post reported on Tuesday that the two sides were set to meet.
Epstein, 47, who guided the Red Sox and Cubs to shattering World Series titles – he has three championship rings in total – was free to speak with the Mets without needing permission (he spent the last season as a consultant for the MLB).
If the Mets choose to pursue other big fish, such as Billy Beane of Oakland or David Stearns of Milwaukee, that would require permission from the respective clubs, as both are under contract.
