Le’Veon Bell has only been a member of the Ravens for a day, but he could adapt well on Monday.
Bell joined Baltimore as an addition to the practice squad this week, a move that became official with Wednesday’s trade thread. He joined the Ravens in hopes of providing the Ravens with a fallback option following season-ending injuries to running backs JK Dobbins and Justice Hill, but with his arrival just days before the start of the season. from Baltimore, an important role would seem out of the question.
An additional role is not, however, unpredictable.
“Le’Veon is a guy I think we know very well, of course,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Thursday. “We’ve played against him so many times in so many very competitive and emotional games. It was fun having him for training, he trained well. He trained yesterday, did a good job. “So we’ll have a process with him. He’s excited, he’s learning and we’ll see where he’s going.”
Harbaugh added that “there is a chance” Bell will be elevated to the active roster and play against the Raiders on Monday.
With just one practice on the books entering Thursday’s session, Bell will need to cram in as much as possible to be ready to help the Ravens. Baltimore doesn’t have an extreme body need, as the team list Gus Edwards as the starter with Ty’Son Williams and Trenton Cannon behind him on the depth board, but having Bell available wouldn’t hurt either.
The NFL has postponed its COVID-19 roster rules implemented last season, giving teams more room to promote practice squad players in an emergency. Under these amended rules, Bell could be elevated to the active list by 4 p.m. ET Sunday without the need to move the corresponding list. It could also be high within 90 minutes of kickoff if a player tested positive for COVID-19.
Basically there is room for Bell on the list as it is. His promotion would draw attention to the Ravens, thanks to the recognition of Bell’s name. We don’t know how much he is capable of helping Baltimore’s chances, but if Bell is anywhere near the elite he once was before his career has seen a downturn in recent years, he would be an asset. .
Knowing this, Harbaugh doesn’t let his involvement out of the question. We’ll have to wait until the weekend to see if Bell ends up playing a role in Baltimore’s opener against Las Vegas.
