Brie Larson (Captain Marvel / Carol Danvers) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Stephen Strange) are two of the biggest names in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Both MCU stars have been involved in the Avengers franchise, as well as their own standalone franchises – and both have new movies coming out next year.

British actor Cumberbatch will star in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) alongside WandaVision Principal Lady Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch / Wanda Maximoff), while Larson will reprise her MCU role in Wonders (2022) with another WandaVision starring, Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau).

Oddly enough, although both actors are clearly content to continue their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – unlike Robert Downey, Jr. (Tony Stark / Iron Man) who severed ties with the MCU after his character’s tragic death. in Avengers: Endgame (2019) – none of them will be voicing their characters in the upcoming Marvel Studios animated series, What if…?

What if…? Set to debut August 11, 2021 on the Disney + streaming service, and will feature voice talent from many live MCUs Avengers franchise stars including Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner / the Hulk), Josh Brolin (Thanos), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter) , Paul Rudd (Scott Lang / Ant-Man), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Michael Douglas (Dr Hank Pym), Michael B. Jordan (Erik “Killmonger” Stevens), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton / Hawkeye), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier) and the late actor Chadwick Boseman (T’Challa / Black Panther).

The question that is on everyone’s mind is why Larson and Cumberbatch aren’t appearing since neither were likely making their next Marvel movies when What if…? was in production – and, theoretically at least, there’s a very good reason for that.
They could both do their Star wars the franchise debuts in the same series.

Marvel fans and Star wars fans have long wanted Cumberbatch to play a live-action version of Star Wars Rebels Evil Grand Admiral Thrawn (voiced by Lars Mikkelsen).
The call for him to be cast in the role intensified when the antagonist’s name was whispered to Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) by Magistrate Corvus Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) in The Mandalorian Season 2, episode 5 (“Chapter 13: The Jedi”).

This cemented that Thrawn would appear in showrunner Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni. Mandalorian universe, but we still don’t know who will play it, although recent reports indicate that Thrawn has already completed filming on his first live-action series. If these reports occur, the character will debut not in Mandalorian spin off, Ahsoka, as expected, but instead in Boba Fett’s book.

Although Cumberbatch has denied rumors that he will play Thrawn, it wouldn’t be the first time that a Star wars the actor – or the Marvel actor, for that matter – has not been allowed to confirm a role. Ewan McGregor, for example, recently spoke about how long he must have been lying about taking over as Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Additionally, if Cumberbatch plays Grand Admiral Thrawn in Boba Fett’s book, this opens the door for Brie Larson to finally join the Star wars universe as Mara Jade Skywalker, a role for which she would be the favorite.

It would make sense for Thrawn and Mara Jade – Luke Skywalker’s wife in Star wars Legends material – to do their live-action Star wars canon debut together. In Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn trilogy of novels, the two worked closely together during Mara Jade’s time as the Emperor’s Hand Assassin for the Galactic Empire.

This was, of course, long before she became the wife of a Jedi knight and a full member of the Jedi Council.
Many Star wars Expanded Universe fans believe Mara Jade’s debut in The Mandalorian the saga is inevitable now that Luke Skywalker (CGI Mark Hamill) has returned to the Star wars story as Grogu’s Jedi master.

At present, the only solid casting information we have on Boba Fett’s book comes from the next generic post scene The Mandalorian Season 2 finale episode (“Chapter 16: The Rescue”). Temuera Morrison will return as bounty hunter Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen will return as Fennec Shand.

There are unconfirmed rumors that the two Mandalorian frontman Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin) and Timothy Olyphant (Mos Pelgo Marshal Cobb Vanth) – who was featured in The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 1 (“Chapter 9: The Marshal”) – will also appear.

Keep in mind that at this time neither Lucasfilm nor Disney have confirmed anything regarding the casting for Grand Admiral Thrawn or Mara Jade Skywalker.
But, it seems inevitable that these characters will appear sooner rather than later – and they may have a major connection to the MCU.
