Update:
Turns out, the McDonald’s PlayStation 5 DualSense controller was never meant to be advertised in the first place. IGN learned that design was an internal concept that never left the planning stage, let alone something McDonald’s approached PlayStation about.
In a statement from McDonald’s Australia, the company confirmed that “the image was provided to the media in error and that there is no commercial relationship between McDonald’s Australia and Sony PlayStation”.
This is in addition to the company’s previous statement that Sony PlayStation does not allow the use of its controller in promotional material.
Despite the mockup’s design, Sony PlayStation and McDonald’s Australia have no official partnership on the controller, which is bad news for people looking to grow their DualSense collection.
Original Story: McDonald’s Australia announced last week that it will be offering a limited number of special edition PS5 controllers, each customized to include burgers and fries artwork as well as an asymmetrical white, red and yellow color scheme. It started an internet-wide discussion about whether or not they were cool – it all turned out to be academic when Sony stepped in to prevent the controllers from being released.
As Press Start reported, the broadcast week scheduled to include controller giveaways was suddenly postponed, and McDonald’s has confirmed that when that does happen, the fast food-themed DualSense controllers will no longer be among the options. celebrations.
“Sony PlayStation has not authorized the use of its controller in promotional material related to the proposed Stream Week event and we apologize for any inconvenience caused,” wrote a spokesperson. “McDonald’s streaming week has been postponed and Sony PlayStation controllers will not be included in the giveaway.
Sony has released very few official versions of the DualSense controllers since the PS5 launched, which might explain why it stepped in here. Famously, the company even played a role in forcing the makers of custom PS5 parts to cancel all of their pre-order sales.
Closest to McDonald’s design is painting your own controller white, and unless you’re one of those people, we don’t suggest you try that. If you want something a little different, we at least now have a choice between the black and red controller options.
The only open question, of course, is whether the controllers were just a concept or whether McDonald’s had any made already. If it’s the latter, you can probably bet on one that will become an extremely valuable video game collector’s item for years to come.
