The iPhone 13 having been made official, we had a first glimpse of the new features included. Conversely, we also saw what very popular features did not see the light of day.
Wi-Fi 6th
Earlier in 2021, there were reports of vendors stepping up production of 6th Wi-Fi chips for the iPhone 13. As we now know, it didn’t work.
While the name “6th” doesn’t quite adhere to the Coalition’s simple identification goals, 6th Wi-Fi is a big upgrade for the wireless standard. The improved technology can more than double the bandwidth possible for consumer devices by opening up the 6 GHz spectrum for the first time. Existing Wi-Fi devices can still connect on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.
The upgrade would be of great benefit to users when it arrives, especially in congested areas like towns and apartments. As a Wi-Fi standard, Apple will adopt it at some point, although the oldest is now the alleged “iPhone 14”.
Permanent display
Another feature that seemed almost certain was the always-on display. We’ve seen display improvements this year, including a ProMotion display that can go up to 120Hz, but the always-on look never saw the light of day.
It seemed like a very reasonable rumor that would be exciting for users and borrow features that Apple had already brought to Apple Watch.
IPhone 12 Pro screen
We still think Apple might switch to an always-on display for iPhone, it just won’t be in 2021.
Faster charger
Fast technology cited sketchy second-hand sources that the iPhone 13 might see a faster charge. Perhaps even by introducing a new 25 W power brick that would be offered alongside.
This is just one of many accusation rumors that lingered before launch. We had also heard that MagSafe could be improved and that this could finally be the year that we will have two-way wireless charging.
It turns out that none of these speculations came true.
Satellite communications
Finally, a month before the announcement, a wave of rumors referred to a new satellite communication coming to the iPhone 13. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said so in late August, but another source said that that would not happen.
There was further discussion of which satellites or markets would be supported, but at the end of the day it was not held up if the feature existed at all.
Coming soon
Regardless of the features Apple didn’t include, the iPhone 13 has plenty to get users excited about. The new line of devices is expected to go on sale from September 24.
