These Houston-area hospitals should get the coronavirus vaccine first

The first batch of the Houston-area coronavirus vaccine will include 59,475 doses of inoculation, state health officials said on Friday.

Earlier this week, Gov. Greg Abbott said the state would receive its first vaccine allocation – around 1.4 million doses from drugmakers Pfizer and Moderna – starting in mid-December, pending approval. federal.

“As expected, the initial vaccine supply is limited and the allocation for the first week is based on information submitted by vaccine providers upon enrollment, including the number of health workers who can be rapidly immunized and vaccine storage capacity at each site, ”DSHS said in an update on its website. “More vaccines will be available for more vendors in the coming weeks, including Moderna’s vaccine once it is licensed.”

Larger allocations are expected in January and the following months, Abbott said in a statement.

“The state of Texas is already ready for the arrival of a COVID-19 vaccine, and will quickly distribute these vaccines to Texans who voluntarily choose to be vaccinated,” Abbott said in a statement. “While waiting for the first shipment of these vaccines, we will work with communities to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

About 224,000 doses are expected to arrive by Dec. 14, according to the Texas State Department of Health. Authorities will distribute the initial shipment to 109 hospitals in 34 counties across the state.

21 hospitals in Harris County, four in Montgomery County, one in Galveston County and one in Fort Bend County have been selected to receive the vaccine.

State health officials have said that hospital staff working directly with patients who have tested positive or are at high risk for COVID-19, emergency medical service providers who engage in them. 911 emergency services such as pre-hospital care and transportation, home health care workers and residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities are among the first Texans eligible to receive the vaccine.
