The thieves stole a fully functional 18-carat gold toilet at the Blenheim British Palace, where it had been installed as an art exhibit, police said Saturday.
The lavatories, valued at more than $ 5 million ($ 6.9 million), were part of an exhibition devoted to the works of the Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan, who opened two days ago in the seigniorial mansion located 60 km west of London, a major tourist attraction.
The toilet, named "America", was previously displayed in a booth at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where more than 100,000 visitors were able to use it.
Thieves with at least two vehicles broke into the palace, the birthplace of World War II leader Winston Churchill, and removed the toilet shortly before 5:00 am (4:00 GMT), police said. Thames Valley.
