ThinkGeek officially absorbed by GameStop, proposes a huge sale of closing

ThinkGeek, the beloved collectible collection site that has been a staple of the Internet since 1999, is closing its virtual doors. GameStop, which acquired the company in 2015, will fully absorb ThinkGeek on July 2nd.

Browse all the sites adjacent to the entertainment these days (including Polygon dot com) and you will likely encounter banner ads for Avengers T-shirts and Pokemon Plush toys, but this is not always the case. ThinkGeek was one of the first places on the internet to reliably find a cute and geeky merch. While sites such as Her Universe and Loot Crate have sprung up over the last two decades, ThinkGeek has continued to be a standard bearer of this very special space.

ThinkGeek also holds a special place in our hearts for promoting, sometimes, the strangest products ever seen on the Internet (and that says a lot). Some, like Alien facehugger snorkel, were jokes of the day of April. Others look more like a YouTube comment section that has gained in sensitivity and designed its ideal outfit. Hey, they can not all be winners.

Personally, as a Polygon resident retailer, ThinkGeek has been a favorite place to research fun, unique and fun products to recommend, and I'm sad to see it disappear.

ThinkGeek does not disappear completely, though. A FAQ section on the site states that "you will be able to shop a selection of unique items historically found on ThinkGeek.com via a ThinkGeek section on GameStop", giving the impression that no new ThinkGeek product will be moved . towards the front. This same FAQ also states that ThinkGeek stores will remain open for the time being and that there will always be a ThinkGeek section in most GameStop stores.

On the other hand, until the final closure of the site, you have a few weeks left to shop in the ThinkGeek catalog with a 50% discount coupon. Code DAY OF MOVING takes half of anything on the site.
