Does your smartphone have a notch, hole punch, or even a pop-up camera? Selfie cameras are one of the most controversial elements of modern smartphones, and they may one day be scrapped with the introduction of under-screen selfie shooters.
The ZTE Axon 20 5G is the first commercially available smartphone to feature an underscreen selfie camera, and we can confirm that it works.
We’ve been using the ZTE Axon 20 5G for a few weeks now and the selfie camera is working fine, but it’s not without issues. Below we’ll show you some of the selfies he’s capable of taking, and tell you about our first impressions of the camera itself.

How does an underscreen selfie camera work?
It’s not something that ZTE revealed itself to be, but an insightful JerryRigEverything teardown video that you can see below gives us a glimpse of how ZTE made this possible.
Basically the company used two screens here. You won’t notice, however, that there are two screens.
There is the standard 6.92 inch OLED panel which functions as a normal smartphone screen, then there is a smaller square screen which sits above the selfie camera itself to allow the shooter to look out. through.
There will likely be more than that, but it’s the best information we have until ZTE clarifies the details. This will likely be how companies incorporate this technology on future phones that we plan to include underscreen selfie cameras.
For example, we’ve seen patents from Samsung that suggest it is experimenting with similar technology. That may mean we’re seeing it on the company’s future phones like the Galaxy Note 21 or Galaxy Z Fold 3.
What do selfies look like?
So what do the selfie photos look like on the ZTE Axon 20 5G? They are fine, but the quality of the camera is not phenomenal. This phone uses a 32MP front camera with f / 2.0 aperture.
Overall, the Axon 20 5G’s camera shoots smooth photos that have faint colors at best but can be blown out at worst. We have found that when most phone selfie cameras performed well in good lighting, this camera was blurry at best.
In darker conditions, we found that the Axon 20 5G’s selfie camera would lose detail and couldn’t compete with most other smartphones with similar specs on their front shooters.
Overall, it’s not great, and part of it seems to be that it’s covered with a screen above the selfie camera. That said, this is the first implementation of this technology, so we hope to see it improve on future smartphones.
Will it ever replace the notch?
No one knows for sure if sub-screen selfie cameras will become the norm, but we expect the technology to debut on smartphones from more brands throughout 2021.
It’s likely to become an alternative to notch-and-hole-punch selfie cameras in the coming years, but there’s no guarantee that this will completely eliminate technology seen by other manufacturers.
This is all the more true since ZTE’s phone’s sub-screen selfie camera is not transparent. You can see the selfie camera when using the smartphone, and it is not useful when the purpose of the technology is to hide the camera.
This is probably something that we see improving in the future, but at the moment it doesn’t hide well under the phone screen, especially when using this part of the screen.
It’s a big step forward for sub-display technology to be available on a phone you can buy, and we hope to see some major improvements in this technology in the months and years to come.
