Drawn by Alexis Zirit, this mix of Batman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez comes at a point in the comics where Bruce Wayne, ironically, isn’t a rich man.
A recent fan art composition provided a political / superhero mashup in the form of Batman and US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Drawn by freelance comic artist Alexis Ziritt (Space riders, Night hunters), the illustration was released on Batman Day, which is held on the third Saturday in September. It shows Batman with the words “TAX THE RICH” engraved on his cape. The pose is similar to the viral photographs of Democratic Representative Ocasio-Cortez, who wore a custom Brother Vellies dress with the same message at the Met Gala on September 13.
Ocasio-Cortez has proposed raising the marginal tax rate to 70% for people earning more than $ 10 million a year, arguing that such a move would fund social programs, including his Green New Deal proposal to fight against climate change. In a recent Instagram post, she defended her decision to mirror this statement on her dress, arguing that “the medium is the message.” In a follow-up post, the MP wrote that the dress was a means of injecting “urgent conversations about race, class, climate and justice into an event that is … one of the biggest spectacles in the world.” excess to the world “.
A number of voices were raised to applaud Ocasio-Cortez for making a political statement and supporting Aurora James, the black designer and small business owner behind the dress. Others blasted the MP for what they saw as a performative blow.
Applying the tagline on Ocasio-Cortez’s dress to a superhero known for his billionaire status might seem incongruous, but Ziritt’s art comes at a point in the Batman books where Bruce Wayne is far from a rich man. During last year’s “Joker War” event, mostly narrated in the pages of Batman # 95-100, the Dark Knight’s immense fortune was seized by the Joker, who revealed to the world that Bruce was hiding large amounts of Wayne Enterprises money in offshore accounts. This money was used to fund Bruce’s crime-fighting crusade, but in order to protect his secret identity and avoid tainting his business name, Bruce decided to leave his fortune in the hands of Lucius Fox. following the defeat of the Joker.
Forced to become a leaner vigilante without the endless array of gadgets Wayne Enterprises offered him, Bruce left Wayne Manor behind and currently lives in a brownstone in Gotham City. Recent issues of the Batman books have shown him working in a relatively low-tech garage, digging underground tunnels himself and leaning on old costumes.
In addition to Ziritt’s artwork, a number of more traditional tributes to the Dark Knight were posted on the internet on Batman Day, including an article by The batman director Matt Reeves who has revealed a new preview for the film, which is slated for release in 2022.
