If Glenn Close wins an Oscar Sunday night, it is unlikely that his appearance on the podium is as unusual as Saturday night's Independent Spirit Awards. That's because she was accompanied by her dog Pip who, at one point, rolled on his back and waved on stage, reports E! Online. Pip, of course, has his own Instagram account, under the full name of Sir Pippin of Beanfield. "It's my date," explained Close. The 71-year-old Oscar-winning actress is the favorite of the best actress Sunday night for her role in Wife.
As suggested by Pip's appearance, the Santa Monica Spirit Awards are a "laid-back preamble at the edge of the ocean" at the Academy Awards, according to the AP. They focus on low-budget American films. The big winners:
- Best film: If Beale Street could speak
- Best female role: Glenn Close, Wife
- Best male role: Ethan Hawke, First reformed
- Best Support Woman: Regina King, If Beale Street could speak
- Best support male: Richard E. Grant, Can you ever forgive me?
- Best director: Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street could speak
