Plus, Kevin is having a rough week trying to impress a new director (who I have THOUGHTS of, but we’ll get to that in a minute), and Randall inadvertently gets fined, fiiiiine viral sensation thanks to Malik… which ends up bringing us a little closer to solving the first mystery of this season: Is Laurel still alive?

GO HECK TO SLEEP | Let’s start with the flashwayback, which chronicles the time when Rebecca and Jack have to train little Kevin to sleep through the night. As is often the case, the process is arduous and filled with sobs on all sides. But Jack firmly insists that their boy must learn to cope on his own, even though Rebecca protests that he needs them. Finally, just as she’s about to walk into her room and stop the screaming, Kevin calms down. Successful sleep training!
GRIDIRON GOALS | Now we’re moving to when the Big Three are in college, and Kevin’s coach thinks there can be something big if he just buckles down and commits – including learning the book. This time around, Rebecca pulls Jack aside and worries that all the weightlifting, training and football prep is wearing out their son, and Jack agrees… but says it’s worth it if l exhaustion is for something Kevin loves. Still, Rebecca is about to allow Kevin to quit – which prompts Jack to tell her that she made him a little ‘soft’ (ugh) – when she notices Kev working with Randall on a system. study that will help him learn the pieces.
ATTA BOY | In the present, Kevin arrives on a soundstage to meet his Glass eye co-star Ava (played by Lovecraft CountryJamie Chung, the fierce female fox) and Project Director Jordan Martin Foster, who instantly becomes my enemy when he asks Kevin to call their business a “movie” and not a “movie”. As they go through the script, Foster adores Eva but is extremely cold towards Kevin. Then Kevin pulls the director aside and wonders what he can do to make things better. “I didn’t know you were the kind of guy who needs an ‘Atta-boy’,” Jordan told him, adding a very condescending coda on how Kevin is a good actor but could be a great one.
And rather than being like “whatever,” Kevin and his story of sweetness and gentleness take commentary to heart. So that night, he uses Randall’s color-coded flash card system to learn the script for the movie. And Foster sends him an attack-boy gift basket, so… yeah?
Kate’s painful past | Kate accompanies Ellie to her ultrasound and accidentally refers to the baby as Chloe, aka the name she would like to give the child if the adoption goes ahead. When Ellie stiffens, it’s clear that’s a sore spot for her. So Kate apologizes outside, and Ellie tells her that a high school classmate who tried to dismay her crush / future husband to go out with her was named Chloe. Then she admits that she is really overwhelmed by the pregnancy and almost aborted it earlier in the year. “For me it was not the right choice,” she said, adding that she had doubts about her whole life – except for Toby and Kate.
Later that night, Ellie’s revelation prompts Kate to tell Toby about something she had previously kept a secret: As a teenager, after her split with Marc, she realized she was pregnant.
RANDALL BARES ALL HALF | As part of a civic education mission, Malik overshadows Randall at work. His big job: running the live stream of Randall’s regular online newsletter with voters. Everything is going well until Malik’s mom calls towards the end of the show, and the teenager is distracted by her questions about Janelle’s teething issues. Malik therefore neglects to stop his live broadcast after Randall stops speaking – although Randall is not aware of this fact. GORGED. The city councilor takes care of his next job of changing to run, so anyone looking is treated to his awkward, shirtless dance as he takes off his shirt and folds it up.
At home, Déja and Tess watch and start to panic. Finally, Deja reaches Malik, and he immediately stops the flow. He apologizes a lot and makes Randall understand how focused he is on Janelle and how he has big plans that will allow her to have a good life. Randall is so impressed that he ends up hiring Malik as a town hall intern.
Jaewon later calls: His founding newsletter goes viral. And when the grandfather living on a boat we met in the season premiere clicks on it, he’s less focused on Randall’s pecs and more concerned with Randall’s mention of his biological father. William Hill’s name clearly rings a bell for him, which brings us one step closer to knowing where Laurel is.
