McCarthy’s group ranges from the right – Jim Banks is chairman of the Conservative Republican Study Board – to the far right in Ohio, Jim Jordan, the founder of the Freedom Caucus and Trump’s fiercest advocate known to legislate in shirt sleeves. Liz Cheney, who was demoted from her number three role in the Republican caucus because she called Trump’s Big Lie before and after Jan. 6 and Pelosi previously appointed to the commission had been with “That fucking guy, Jim Jordan. The Republicans who are now charged with investigating what happened during this invasion are united in calling on us all to come to an agreement and move on; nothing to see here. By accusing the left of being authoritarian, Banks is projecting his party support for a proto-fascist attempt to overthrow an election on its enemies. And just because McCarthy sends a few clowns to argue that there is nothing to investigate here doesn’t mean Democrats won’t have their hands full. Like AOC, who didn’t want to demean themselves by debating Marjorie Taylor Greene, Democrats are caught between trying not to stoop to constantly bickering with Republicans, but don’t want to let their lies lie on record, uncorrected .
They must expose their fictions, then get back to business quickly to find out what the GOP is trying to keep a secret: what did they know and when did they know about the mob’s “spontaneous” plans for an invasion when the attackers with weapons and pre-printed t-shirts transported to town? Who brought them in for reconnaissance before the attack? Who abandoned the maps of the underground tunnels and the path to the president’s office? Where are the visitor logs and emails? Who could have called in reinforcements but chose not to?
We know that Trump, who never checked in with Pence as much as the mob was looking for, called McCarthy in the middle of the bloody assault. The “leader”, this weasel, he even asked the president to recall his supporters? We don’t know the answer, but the committee should find out. What we do know is that Trump did not cancel them.
Meanwhile, Democrats should keep in mind that time is running out not in a chess match, but in a loud hockey game. It won’t take long for Republicans to deliver the boring audiences.
There are perhaps two symbolic moderates among the McCarthy Five, depending on your definition of moderate. As he will hardly be heard if his more talkative colleagues have anything to say about it, meet Representative Rodney Davis of the House Administration Committee, whose portfolio includes underground parking. There is also first-term representative Kelly Armstrong, whose position in a letter signed by seven colleagues agreed with Trump’s big lie but argued that Congress couldn’t stop the theft because it lacked the authority.
If Pelosi doesn’t reject any of McCarthy’s choices, they will join his nominations – seven Democrats plus Cheney – as evidenced by early witnesses. They’ll be police officers on duty that day – the men and women in blue support Republicans when they turn roadside checks into justifiable homicides, but not when they lie bloodied and beaten up by Trump supporters. The first of them will be DC cop Michael Fanone, who begged for his life out of fear that day.
McCarthy, who said on Jan.6 that Trump bore some responsibility for what happened, is now determined to prevent Trump from being held responsible and to obscure the historical record. He only takes this congressional effort seriously to the extent that he actively aims to derail it by appointing a crew whose members either don’t know, agree, or hope those who don’t examine the story are condemned to repeat it.
