While many restaurants attempt to entice diners with exaggerated descriptions of their food, one restaurant owner has taken a markedly different approach in lowering customer expectations.

Chinese restaurant Aunt Dai in Montreal, Canada, recently went viral for owner Feigang Fei’s dish descriptions on the website.

Highlights of the menu, which features authentic Chinese and North American dishes, include:

“Compared to our General Tao chicken, this one is not SO good,” reads Fei’s comment on Aunt Dai’s orange chicken. “Either way, I’m not a big fan of North American Chinese food and it’s your call.”

“This one is NOT authentic Chinese food,” the description of the black pepper shrimp reads.

For the sweet and spicy pork strips, Feigang wrote, “Since I have so many expectations on this dish, I’m not a huge fan of our version to be honest.”

“This dish is very well known and we are not 100% satisfied with the flavor now and it will improve very soon,” Fei wrote of the “mouthwatering chicken”.

He continued, “PS I’m surprised some customers still order this plate. In my opinion, our Szechuan Pepper Chicken Salad is better than this one.”

The fun menu went viral after writer Kim Belair tweeted screenshots.

His tweet has been retweeted over 71,000 times, and many people have expressed their love for Fei’s comments.

The restaurant owner told Insider he decided to add the descriptions about five years ago, after he opened Aunt Dai in February 2014.

“At first, much of the food on our menu was authentic, traditional Chinese, and by the names, many customers were surprised that the dishes were too spicy, too fatty, or having bones, so they didn’t. haven’t done… touch the dish and it was a total waste, ”Fei said.

And that’s where he came up with the idea to add descriptions to the online menu. Fei started with 5-10 articles, but his clients found them so useful that he wrote more.

Fei then took it a step further by creating videos of each dish and posting them to YouTube, so customers could see the food before ordering.

The restaurant has been open for take-out throughout the pandemic under government guidelines (excluding Christmas Day), but Fei didn’t expect his menu to go viral.

It wasn’t until he was contacted by a German journalist that he learned of Belair’s tweet, and Fei didn’t believe it until he saw it himself. “I thought it was a joke,” he says.

Aunt Dai has now had media coverage around the world, and Fei and Belair have formed a friendship. The two exchanged phone numbers and chatted after Fei’s “Crazy Week”.

“It was really great,” said Fei. “All the articles mention Kim and me, so we’re going to be bonded forever. We’re probably going to become best friends.”
