No gods among us, only nasty treats
Mortal Kombat has become the king of fighting game guest characters over the past decade, where God of War’s Kratos really set things in motion, but apparently almost didn’t.
Series co-creator Ed Boon recently revealed that his team had attempted to include a different PlayStation icon to fight Scorpion and Liu Kang, which would certainly have been a treat for many to see.
When news broke earlier this week that Anthony Mackie would be producing and staring in a live-action Twisted Metal series, the creative director of NetherRealm Studios stepped in to share some facts about his connection to the franchise.
First, Boon says he met David Jaffe, who designed and ultimately ran the Twisted Metal games as well as the original God of War, likely in the mid to late ’90s to discuss the idea of Midway creating an arcade version of the brutal car battle series – which feels like a match made in hell.
He went on to post that Sweet Tooth had come “very close” to being a guest character in the Mortal Kombat games on more than one occasion.
Sweet Tooth has also (more than once) been DAMN close to being a guest fighter in MK games.

Taking a look at the killer clown, technically named Needles Kane, his most popular designs certainly seem to fit perfectly into the world of Mortal Kombat.
The dude might have a fiery head competition with Scorpion, and Needles isn’t exactly known for playing well with his enemies, whether he’s in the Sweet Tooth Ice Cream Truck or outside.
Boon doesn’t specify which titles MK Kane / Sweet Tooth potentially had to make an appearance, but it’s probably safe to assume that one of them was Mortal Kombat 9 from 2011.
The timing of the deal would have been pretty good considering the Twisted Metal reboot released on PlayStation 3 less than a year later and which was previously announced at E3 2010.
For some reason, however, Kratos ended up being the choice as Sony’s exclusive fighter. That decision likely boiled down to the fact that the Godslayer was more easily recognizable and had appeared as a guest in a number of other games before, including Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny.
Sweet Tooth would eventually shine in a fighting game thanks to PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale where Kane was given a machete along with other tools of destruction like a chainsaw, Molotov cocktails, explosive mines and a shotgun – which are quite a lot of things we’ve seen in Mortal Kombat games since as well.
It’s a shame we’ve never seen the Clown’s Torch or run over Shao Kahn with his truck, but maybe the next TV series will spark a resurgence in video games for another bang.
