Someone built a custom portable PS2 to play Kingdom Hearts, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and other PlayStation classics on the go Nintendo Switch style.
GingerOfOz’s “PS2 Eclipse” is built from a die-cut PS2 motherboard crammed into a sleek 3D printed case, which has been painted black to match the PS Vita buttons and Switch joysticks. Because the handheld console uses the original Sony motherboard, it is able to play real PS2 games with no problem and at full speed without having to emulate anything.
The PS2 Eclipse features a 5-inch, 480p screen, side speakers, battery life indicator, and headphone jack. Since there is no disc drive, games need to be ported fairly slowly via USB, and as The Verge points out, this can cause some games to stutter slightly and result in long load times. But honestly, these seem like minor compromises in what is otherwise an impressively clean platform.
GingerOfOz says they don’t plan to sell the PS2 Eclipse at this time, although that could change if it gets enough attention. For now, I’m going to show you how the creator technically works with his portable PS2, as well as how to make one for yourself.
