Yep, Nintendo Switch is cool and all, but have you ever played a portable PlayStation 2? Probably not, because Sony never made one, and although the PS Vita and the PSP both had plenty of PS2 ports – well, they couldn’t play GTA: San Andreas, did. not? This hobby project named PS2 Eclipse by GingerofOz can, however.
It was built using original PS2 Slim components, so it’s a perfect portable version of the iconic console. There are a few caveats: there is no disk drive, so it runs all of its games on a memory card that has homebrew. Other than that, there is no emulation here: every game works exactly the same as on the original material.
It’s quite chunky, especially in terms of depth – but that’s because the original PS2 Slim motherboard is inside, and while Sony has done a remarkable job of cutting down on components, it’s still a lot. bigger than your traditional handheld. Nonetheless, this is a truly impressive adaptation, and it kind of makes us wish there was a legitimate PS2 Portable. Are you listening, Sony?
