What could be better than an ultra-high-tech, Impossible mission-style mask? The deepfake tech this TikToker uses to impersonate Tom Cruise, apparently (via The daily beast). Deeptomcruise’s account appears to feature someone claiming to be the famous actor, and the impression isn’t just mind-blowing because of the way the person reproduces Cruise’s famous laugh.
How can you tell it’s not actually Tom Cruise using some weird sort of Twitter name? First, her voice is near, but it’s not enough there, especially since lip synchronization is a bit shifted at certain times. You can hear what the real cruise looks like in this video (unless, of course, James Corden got it deep as well).
Second, while the tracking and lighting on the face is almost immaculate – especially when the actor passes something in front of his face – there are still a few telling glitches, especially in the golf one where the sunglasses disappear and his mouth transforms for a frame or two.
Even with these little flaws, the effect is still frightening. I’m not going to shout from the rooftops that deepfakes will be ruinous to society, but the fact that someone is posing, almost presumably, as a famous actor on TikTok (and gaining 236,000 followers in the process) shows that he is. still difficult to follow the deepfakes. Although the account makes it pretty clear that this is a fake by using “deep” in its name, the next one to appear may not appear. TikTok did not immediately respond to an email from The edge asking if this type of account is allowed under its terms of service, but its TOS explicitly call spoofs as prohibited:
You can not: […]
impersonate any person or entity, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent you or your affiliation with any person or entity, including by giving the impression that any content you download, post, transmit, distribute or otherwise make available from the Services
Having said that, this account seems to be a bit of fun. If you’re reading this, anyone running deeptomcruise (or the real Tom Cruise), please show us if this tech can keep up with your best Tom Cruise run, or if it can handle you dancing and lip-syncing with Bob Seger. Whatever you do, leave Oprah, fool or not, out of it.
