Researchers at Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health recently conducted a study, published in the journal Circulation, to explore the potential benefits of nut consumption for the health of people with type 2 diabetes.

To do this, they examined more than 16,000 adults with diabetes who participated in a previous study. The subjects completed a questionnaire on their diet, which included questions about their consumption of nuts and peanuts. They had to update the survey every two to four years.

During follow-up, approximately 3,330 cases of cardiovascular disease, which may lead to heart failure, heart attacks and strokes, have been reported. There were also approximately 5,600 deaths, of which nearly 30% were due to cardiovascular disease.

After further analysis, scientists discovered that high consumption of nuts was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. In fact, diabetics who ate at least five servings of nuts by 17% were less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than diabetics who consumed less than one serving per month. One serving was defined as an ounce.

Even a serving of nuts has proven beneficial. The addition of an extra portion was associated with a risk of developing heart problems 3% lower and a risk of death from heart problems of 6%.

What types of nuts are the best? The authors found that nuts, such as nuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, pecans, macadamias, hazelnuts and pine nuts, were more closely associated with risk of heart disease as peanuts.

The team said walnuts could offer more benefits because they contain more nutrients that improve blood sugar control, blood pressure, fat metabolism, inflammation and blood vessel wall function.

"Our findings provide new evidence that supports the recommendation to include nuts in healthy eating habits for the prevention of cardiovascular complications and premature deaths in diabetics," said the senior author of the report. study, Gang Liu.
