Firefighters are battling a forest fire that has spread rapidly in more than a thousand acres in the Burlington County Pine Barrens.
The smoke and haze from the fire in the Penn State Forest area, in Washington Township, can be seen as far north as the Toms River, in Ocean County, Freehold in the county from Monmouth and Newark. The smoke is also visible on the radar.
Authorities closed Highway 72 west of Highway 539 in Barnegat.
Local fire departments and the forest fire department are on the premises.
6ABC Action News, citing official sources, said the fire started as a controlled burn.
Early Saturday night, the authorities ordered no residential evacuation.
According to New Jersey 101 Z meteorologist, Dan Zarrow, the low humidity rate of the season increases the risk of fire. His prediction call for rain Sunday morningwhich, according to him, should bring some relief.
