SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – If you were in downtown Springfield on Saturday night, you may have been in your car sitting in traffic.

Our 22News skycam has captured the long lines of cars on East Columbus Avenue while waiting to enter MGM Springfield.

"They built it right downtown and the city leaders approved it, so you have to live with it," said LA Wilson, Springfield.

22News also received messages from frustrated drivers who waited an hour or more before leaving the garage. Many drivers found themselves trapped in traffic jams Saturday because of the exhausted Thunderbirds and MGM Springfield match. Mayor Domenic Sarno told 22News that the city would continue to work with the police department and the state police to improve traffic in the casino.

The parking garage at the Mass Mutual Center was completely filled half an hour before the match.

"Saturday, we could see, the energy of downtown was palpable, it was everywhere," said Nathan Costa, president of Springfield Thunderbirds. "Our car park on the other side of the street was full at 6:20 that day, which prevented many people from entering the free car park." But it 's great to see all the time. activity."

A holiday weekend at MGM Springfield was a busy Saturday night at MGM Springfield. To avoid peak traffic in the future, MGM recommends coming to the casino earlier and staying later on holiday weekends.

You can also try using another means of transportation on busy weekends, for example using the MGM "the Loop" shuttle service or a carpooling service.
