Thousands of Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) employees are expected to seek exemptions from the city’s vaccination mandate, as officers file a lawsuit against the city.
According to Washington post“About 3,000” employees are expected to seek waivers of the city’s mandate, which requires city workers to be vaccinated by early October. Individuals can request exemptions for medical or religious reasons. According to To post, the vast majority ask for religious exemptions.
“If these numbers hold, nearly a quarter of the Los Angeles police force will try to avoid vaccination,” he added. To post reported.
“We have seen a number of our staff who have applied for exemption, based on sincere medical or religious belief,” LAPD chief Michel Moore told the Police Commission of Los Angeles.
“The department will wait for the city to provide instructions on the interpretation and what will happen to these intentions to file,” he added.
The news coincides with a lawsuit filed on Saturday in the United States District Court in Los Angeles by six LAPD agents, claiming that the warrant “violates employees’ constitutional rights to privacy and due process, and asks the court to provide immediate and permanent relief from the requirement, “as the Los Angeles Times reported.
The complaint adds that one of the people “could not claim a medical or religious exemption”. Others have already contracted and recovered from the virus and have natural immunity, leaving no reason to be vaccinated, which the mandate does not take into account.
There are similar concerns across the country. Florida firefighter Maria Bernard spoke about the concerns, slamming vaccination warrants during Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) press conference Monday in Newberry, Florida.
Bernard, an Orange County firefighter for 17 years, explained that she and her husband, who is also a first responder, have already recovered from the coronavirus, but are subject to a demanding Orange County warrant that thousands of union and non-union employees get vaccinated by September 30.
“If this mandate continues, not only will we lose our freedom of choice, but we will lose our jobs and our livelihoods,” she warned.
