Thousands of people walk the streets of Los Angeles at the unveiling of Obama Boulevard – Deadline

With music, food, thousands of enthusiastic residents and VIP guests, Los Angeles has renamed Saturday night a street in honor of former President Barack Obama, replacing Rodeo Road.

Not to be confused with Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Rodeo Road is a 3-km street that runs through the neighborhoods of Baldwin Hills-Crenshaw in Southern California.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, City Council Chair Herb Wesson, Representative Karen Bass (D-Los Angeles) and other elected officers also attended the ceremony.

Prior to the unveiling at 5 pm PT, residents were invited to a concert where Doug E. Fresh, Yo-Yo, Kurupt, Alex Isley, Sheila E. and others were scheduled to perform.

The name change follows a proposal by Wesson and a 15-0 vote by L.A. City Council in August 2018.

"With this change, we are publicly documenting what Obama's legacy as the first black president of our country means to our city and our community in South Los Angeles," Wesson said in a statement.

Rodeo Road has special ties with Obama, who organized a rally in the region while he was running for president in 2007.

The road is located near the President's Row, a series of streets named in honor of former US presidents, including Washington Boulevard, Adams Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard.
