HUGO, Oklahoma – Three children were injured in a police shootout Friday in Oklahoma, when an officer shot a man in a truck suspected of stealing a restaurant earlier in the month, according to investigators of the state.
Brook Arbeitman, a spokesman for the Oklahoma State Investigation Bureau, said that shots had been fired when detectives from the Hugo Police Department in the southeastern part of the country were arrested. Oklahoma had attempted to approach the suspect William Devaughn Smith, 21 years old. She said Smith was suspected during an armed robbery on April 11 at a Pizza Hut in Hugo, near the border with the state of Texas.
The three injured children and a fourth child were all in the truck with Smith, said Arbeitman. The office first announced that two children had been shot, but later learned that a third child had also been hit. The officials did not immediately communicate the names, ages or conditions of the children.
Smith was treated and released at a hospital in Paris, Texas, about 30 miles south of Hugo.
Paris police chief, Bob Hundle, said he did not know the details of what had happened to Hugo, but that his officers had placed Smith in custody so that he would not be in trouble. he may be sentenced to Lamar County Prison in Texas for aggravated theft.
What motivated the shooting is unclear, said Arbeitman. She added that the investigators were not sure if Smith had fired on the police. It was not immediately obvious if he was armed.
An article on the Hugo Police Facebook page indicates that on the day of the Pizza Hut robbery, a man walked into the back door of the restaurant, stuck an object to the back of an employee and was asked for money. The police stated that the worker had handed over money and that the thief had left afterwards.
The calls to Hugo's police did not receive a response on Friday night. An employee of the city's shipping center, who refused to give his name, said all questions should be directed to state investigators.
