Three people, including a sheriff’s deputy, were shot dead at Dulles Crossing Plaza in Sterling on Saturday by a man who took off in a stolen vehicle before finally being apprehended in Chantilly, MPs said.
All three victims sustained serious injuries, but not fatalities, and were taken to hospital, according to Kraig Troxell, public information officer at the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
At a press conference, Sheriff Mike Chapman explained that at around 5 p.m., a man was taken to a Walmart security office by two security guards on suspicion of theft.
He drew a gun and started firing when deputies arrived to take him into custody, Chapman said. The two security guards and one of the deputies were shot dead.
The other deputy, unharmed, fired back and punched the gunman, who managed to escape through the back of the Walmart and hijack a van that had keys inside, Chapman said.
The gunman took off with LCOS MPs and Fairfax County officers chasing him, before crashing into Willard Road and escaping on foot.
After a massive search of Willard’s 13000 block, the suspect was found and taken into custody, News4’s Julie Carey reports.
Earlier on Saturday morning, the LCSO was also investigating an armed bank robbery at the mall, but Chapman said the events did not appear to be linked.
