KANSAS CITY, Missouri – Football games, especially close playoff games, come down to a series of sideline decisions and there were some big ones on Sunday in the closing minutes of the Browns-Chiefs game.
The first decision came with about 11 minutes left in the game when Tyreek Hill caught a 23-yard pass from Chad Henne to the first and 10. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski threw the challenge flag. after Hill got down to the Chiefs 48-yard line, but it didn’t take long to see that Hill had managed to hang on to football after cornerback Denzel Ward ripped him off. The challenge cost the Browns their first time out.
“I should have been better there,” Stefanski said. “There is a cost to those when you lose them because you are wasting downtime. It’s on me.
Stefanski’s next key decision was again. The Browns took over on offense in their 20th with eight minutes remaining, led 22-17 after Karl Joseph’s interception. They took their time making their way through but, after landing a first down on a fourth and a stealth shot from Baker Mayfield, they were forced to use a second timeout.
From there, the Browns ran once, a loss of 1 yard to Chubb, before Mayfield threw an incomplete pitch on the second down and hit Kareem Hunt for two yards on the third and 10. With 4:19 to go in. quarterback, the Browns cleared from their own 32-yard line.
Stefanski said he hadn’t really considered going.
“It was probably too long there at that distance,” he said. “If it was tighter, no doubt.”
You could make the decision work. The Chiefs got a first try – the Browns used their last downtime after the conversion with 3:15 to go – but Myles Garrett sacked Henne in the next set of downs to create a third and 14 in the end of two minutes. Warning.
Except on the third down, Henne rounded the edge and gained 13 yards, bringing us to decision # 3, this time Reid deciding to pass fourth and one of Kansas City’s 48.
“We would make a stop there, we would be settled,” Stefanski said, “so there is a risk involved in their decision, but they trusted their guys and they played.
Perhaps most surprising is Reid and his coaches let Henne pitch – he converted with an completion at Hill to end the game.
