Three Illinois residents face charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a traffic stop.
Sheba Taylor, 26, Jennifer Taylor, 24, and Paul Sherrod Taylor, 28, were all indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday, according to CNN. They face charges of aggravated assault and battery, attempted murder and aggravated assault.
In the incident on June 21, Aurora police officer Joaquin Miranda stopped a vehicle driven by Paul Sherrod Taylor after allegedly lighting a stop sign.
When Miranda approached the car, Taylor then started shouting name-calling refusing to comply with her demands, according to reports. A female passenger then repeatedly requested the presence of a female officer, telling Miranda not to touch her, the outlet reported.
Aurora police shared a Facebook post that included footage from the dashcam that night and a detailed caption describing what happened.
“Moments later, the rear passenger got out of the vehicle,” police said of a female passenger. The officer ordered her to get back into the car several times before informing her that she was under arrest for obstruction. However, before the rear passenger was taken into custody, the driver was also got out of the vehicle, continued yelling obscenities and started approaching the officer in the back of the car. The driver told the officer he would fight him if he hit the rear passenger, “he said. said the police in the caption.
Police also said two women then started “hitting the officer with closed fists and kicking him in the body and head”.
Additional officers eventually arrived at the scene and arrested the suspects.
“A minor offense that probably would have resulted in one citation at most, turned into an officer fighting for his life,” Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman said at a press conference, according to CNN.
Miranda is released from the hospital and is back to work, CNN noted.
