Three-point shooting has become even harder – The Daily Hoosier

The Indianapolis NCAA does not give any favors to the UI basketball program.

After firing 31.2% (311th national) in 2018-2019 by far and 32.2% (307th national) in 2017-18, the Hoosiers will now have to hoist three pointers to more than one foot of the basket.

The NCAA Rules of the Game Committee approved the movement of the 3-point line from 20 feet 9 inches to 22 feet 1 inches. The new distance is in line with international rules and will be effective for the coming season.

The longest distance was tested during the NIT post-season. Indiana played three games during this event and saw its percentages suffer in these competitions. The Hoosiers made 18 of 61 long distance shots, good for 29.5%.

The panel also made some minor modifications related to the rules of the shooting clock, technical faults and times when downtime can be called.

The NCAA Rules Committee has approved the move of the 3-point line of the 22-foot-1 international basketball distance for men's basketball.

The rule will come into force for the 2019-2020 season in division I. Due to the potential financial impact of a new line on the courts, the new 3-point line will come into effect for the 2020 season -21 in divisions II and III. .

Members of the Men's Basketball Rules Committee recommended the change after receiving positive feedback from the annual Coach Rules Survey whose teams participated in the 2018 and 2019 national invitational tournaments, where the international 3-point distance was used on an experimental basis.

The committee cited the following reasons for extending the line:

• Make the way more available for dribbling games / drives from the perimeter.
• Slow the trend of 3-point shooting becoming too prevalent in men's basketball by making shooting a bit more difficult, while keeping the shot in the center of the game.
• Participate in offensive spacing by forcing the defense to cover more ground.

The 2019 NIT teams averaged 23.1 attempts to place in the tournament behind the Bow, compared to 22.8 attempts at 3 points in the 2018-19 regular season. The 3-point shootout percentage of the teams in the 2019 NIT was 33%, compared to their regular season average of 35.2%.

When the line was moved before the 2008-09 season, the distance increased from 19 feet 9 inches to 20 feet 9 inches. The percentage of shots to 3 points achieved during this season compared to the previous season has increased from 35.2% to 34.4%. The percentage of goals scored with 3 points on the field has steadily increased to 35.2% in Division I by the 2017-18 season.
