The US Coast Guard on Tuesday rescued three people who were stranded on a desert island in the Bahamas and survived on coconuts for 33 days.
A helicopter crew first spotted the trio waving a large makeshift flag on Monday during a routine air patrol around Anguilla Cay, an island chain between the Florida Keys and Cuba, said the Coast Guard.
In a video shared on TwitterMiami crew members with the Southeastern U.S. Coast Guard can be seen dropping food, water and a radio to the two men and the woman.
The weather, however, delayed the rescue until Tuesday, officials said.
The three men were taken to the Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West, Florida, the Coast Guard said. No serious injuries were reported.
The castaways, from Cuba, told the rescue team they swam to the deserted island after their boat capsized in rough water, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
US Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon Murray told the newspaper their survival was nothing short of a miracle.
“I don’t remember a time when we rescued people who were stranded for over a month on an island,” he said. “It’s new to me.”
