Thursday and Saturday Flyers-Devils games postponed due to COVID protocols

Everyone can see why 2020-21 is the season for adjustments.

The Flyers, and many other clubs, face their fair share of adjustments this week. The Flyers’ home games Thursday and Saturday against the Devils have been postponed due to NHL COVID protocols. Make-up dates are to be determined.

New Jersey had 16 players on the league’s COVID protocol roster on Sunday. That number rose to 19 on Monday evening. The Devils haven’t played since Jan.31 and are not expected to play until Feb.16.

Flyers defenseman Travis Sanheim did not play in his team’s 7-4 win on Sunday against the Capitals because he was unavailable due to COVID protocol. There are a number of factors that explain why a player may be placed on the COVID protocol list. A player absent because of the COVID protocol does not necessarily mean the player has tested positive for the coronavirus.

The Flyers got a wake-up call at 6:15 a.m.ET on Sunday as all of the team’s players, coaches and staff underwent POC testing ahead of the noon ET game against Washington at Capital One Arena. Head coach Alain Vigneault said the Flyers were unsure if they were going to play on Sunday when they arrived at the arena.

“After all of the tests came back negative, the league, NHLPA and club medical groups determined it was appropriate to play the game,” the NHL said in a statement Sunday after the game.

The Flyers trained at the Capital One Arena on Monday. Sanheim was not available and will not play Tuesday against Washington (6 p.m. ET / NBCSP). Vigneault said all the other players were able to practice on Monday.

After Tuesday’s game, the Flyers won’t play until Sunday, when they visit the Rangers (6 p.m. ET / NBCSP).

With several teams facing postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic, the NHL announced many rescheduled games last Saturday. Four of the Flyers’ games have been affected.

Monday arrived and two more were added to the list.
