A tiger attacks a zookeeper in Kansas

Topeka, Kan. – The director of Topeka Zoo says a zoo keeper who was attacked by a Sumatran tiger remains in intensive care, but his recovery prognosis is good. The zookeeper was attacked Saturday while she was in the open-air habitat of Sanjiv Tiger, a 7-year-old male tiger.

According to the zoo's director, zoo manager Brendan Wiley, the zookeeper was talking Saturday night. Wiley said she was in intensive care Sunday, but that she could soon be transferred out of the unit.

The woman has been working at the zoo since 2002 and has many years of experience with tigers.

Wiley said the zoo was conducting an investigation and would determine the necessary protocol changes after talking to the injured employee.

Wiley said the zoo could have an on-site psychologist Monday so staff members could speak as needed, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal. "It will be more of a normal day once we know that our team member is about to recover," he added.

The tiger attacked the coach in his outdoor habitat, Wiley said. She suffered lacerations and punctures on the back of the head, neck and back. Wiley said that there was "no consideration" for the euthanasia of the tiger, which was again on Sunday.

The incident, which lasted less than 10 minutes, occurred while the zoo was open to the public and others were witnessing it. Topeka Town spokeswoman Molly Hadfield told CBS News that the zoo was closed for 45 minutes and the lion was then placed in a storage area.

According to the zoo's Facebook page, the tiger was reportedly transferred from Akron Zoo to Topeka in 2017. Wiley said Sanjiv had recently spawned four critically endangered cubs.

Justin Carissimo contributed to this report.
