PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – For the first time in his Players Championship career, Tiger Woods put two balls in the water at the 17th hole of Normal 3, which ruined his excellent start to the second round.

Woods fired his first shot at the hole surrounded by water with a short iron, as he stayed long and left and rolled into the water. The hole was 146 yards. Then, from the 100-yard drop zone, he did it again, leading to a quadruple bogey 7 – his highest score in 69 holes on the TPC Stadium course. Woods had to take penalty drops after every water ball, then two 20-foot passes.

It was the only bullet in the water on the hole at this point.

Woods, who started at the back, had a birdie on the 12th, 13th and 16th holes to end up at 5 under and tied for eighth place in the tournament, two strokes behind the leader. The quadruple bogey made it back to 1 under and tied for 57th place, a shot inside the cut line.

The 80-lap PGA Tour winner opened the tournament on Thursday with a score of 2 under par 70. In his previous 17 appearances at the tournament, Woods, 43, was five top-10 finishes, including 2001 and 2013.

Entered the day, Woods had only hit four balls in the water during his career in the 17th.
