Tiger had a difficult start at the PGA. Here is how it happened

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – So it was a bit strange.

Tiger Woods, in his first round of competition since the Masters win, opened his PGA Championship with a first-round roller coaster ride. There were birdies and bogeys, doubles and eagles.

"It was not as clean as I would have liked, that's for sure," Woods said.

His day started early, at 8:24 am local time, after the departure of the 10th tee away from Bethpage Black. Along with reigning champion Brooks Koepka and Open champion Francesco Molinari, Woods showed rust and life, wavering all day between the bad Tiger and the good Tiger.

Here's how the day unfolded, how Tiger shot 72 and how he ranks nine behind Koepka, who gave the show here on Thursday:

On the way to his round …

If the predictions come true, the morning's players could have a big advantage at Bethpage Black in the first round of the PGA Championship. The sun is outside, there is no breath of wind. Rain is expected – again – this afternoon.

Goal: Double bogey
Total for the day: 2 on

Tiger just spoiled his opening hole. It all started with a bad start, then came down from there. At the end of the match, Tiger moved away with a double bogey 6. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka dropped behind the green for a birdie. So, after only one hole, Koepka already has three better shots.

Woods: "It's not a very good start, it's a good car and I found myself in a bad location, and I made it worse by trying to use the panel behind the hole and miss the putt I should have done."

Tiger made things a little easier with number 11, his second hole of the day. Fairway, green, two putts, move on. Nothing like the full double to start your day.

Tiger sails safely on 12, following the same strategy as 11: Fairway, green, two putts. This time, his shot on the other side of the world has almost dropped. Things seem to be stabilizing.

After winning the Masters, Tiger explained that he always had to trust his hands to feel good. Well, they betray him early in Bethpage. In four holes, he has twice missed the green by less than 90 meters. He saved the normal at 13, but it was a birdie lost by chance.

Tiger with a regular feed of 30 feet on the first holes – that's when he hits the green in regulation. This leads to another pair at number 14 to stay 2 on. Obviously, he's just trying to get through the toughest of the last nine. Brooks Koepka has not been so conservative and has two pennies, four ahead of Woods.

The 15th at Bethpage Black is a monster. The second uphill shot is discouraging. Yet Tiger plays the hole perfectly and gets a 15-foot mark for a birdie. This is only the second birdie of the day at the 15th – and it will probably not be much more.

Tiger's tee shot on 16 was not that far. But with how much rain soaked Bethpage Black, this rough is, well, rough. Tiger makes his way through the fairway, then makes a good run and manages to match. To be on the hunt this week, you will have to fend for yourself. Still, he puts a lot of stress early on.

It's an annoyed Tiger Woods coming out of the 17th green. His tee shot, short and in the bunker, is buried. An uncomfortable position, an awkward swing results in a 30-footer for the peer. OK, take a bogey and move on. Instead, Woods three putts for his second double of the day. There will be some words of anger, he murmured as he climbed the hill until the 18th start.

Nobody tears Bethpage Black, but Tiger can not be happy with the first nine out of three, 38 out of 38. Two avoidable double bogeys have done a lot of damage. He is the worst of the three in the brand group: Koepka 3 under; Molinari same.

The day sawtooth for Tiger continues. He scored a 14-foot goal for birdie at No. 1. The problem for him, and perhaps for all the ground, is that Brooks Koepka has made another birdie and is ahead at 4 under. Tiger likes to get into major tournaments, but you can not let Koepka get too far from the view.

Do you think Tiger is happy to not be nine at Bethpage Black? Turning to the front, he opened with birdies on the first and second to move to 1 on.

Tiger can not convert another bird, missing just 9 feet a few moments after Brooks Koepka has made his own. The gap, between Koepka and Tiger, is now six strokes – Koepka at 5 under; Tiger at 1 on. As Koepka played, his score could be even better. It's scary.

Hello everyone. Tiger gets a 31 feet for eagle at the 5th normal 5 hole. What was a nasty first nine improved considerably after the turn. He is now 4-under on four holes in his second nine and is in red numbers, at 1 under, for the first time in this PGA Championship.

Woods: "Well, I had the impression of coming back in the round, I fought to come back and I managed two double bogeys and I still managed to make it below average for the Unfortunately, I had two or three putts there and hit a bad chip there at 8 and left me in a bad place. "

Nothing is simple on this day for Tiger. After a huge eagle in fourth place – his first in a competitive event at Bethpage – he managed to roll three times in a way to lose a fifth place to return to tie. Get ready for a "he left some cliches" theme to his post-tour comments.

An equal foot for Tiger, but it was not without extra work, which was a constant theme in his opening round. His reader found the fairway bunker at No. 6, then his lag putt rolled 3 feet for another tester. It was a strange turn for Tiger.

The Bethpage Black greens do not have much contour. Still, Tiger has problems with these flat greens. Another putt of three dishes appears at No. 7, his 16th hole of the day. All this work to get red numbers was cleared, while Woods fell to 1.

Tiger has taken a month off since the Masters. He played nine holes total this week at Bethpage Black during the practice rounds. Rust is clear in two areas: short play and putting. One bad ground and another misfire at 10 feet lead to another bogey.

Tiger will be disappointed with this round of 2 out of 72. He wasted a ton of shots. And worse, for him, he saw his gaming partner, Brooks Koepka, have made a birdie on the 18th for a 63 without fail.

Woods: "We'll see how it's going to dry up over the next few days, I do not see them reducing the level of difficulty, so he'll just give another bonus to driving the ball in the fairway to reach some of those flags."
