Tiger Woods takes first place in WGC-Mexico championship

MEXICO – At the start of the second round of the WGC-Mexico Championship, when Tiger Woods struggled to make passes for his two opening holes, he found himself 10-in-a-head but did not did not want to panic.

As he was often one of his best assets, Woods was patient Friday, not wanting to pursue Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and the others ahead of him in the standings.

Woods shot 5 under par 66 to pass from a tie for 25th place to a tie for the eighth, six shots back at the Chapultepec Golf Club. McIlroy and Matt Kuchar are tied for second place, two strokes back.

Even though he still has a long way to go, Woods' strategy was solid on Friday, even though he ranks 69th out of 72 players in streaks. He made up for that with his approach game and his work around the greens.

"I had a three-round [putt] on the 17th, but on the whole, the day was good, said Woods, who beat Johnson by six shots. "I felt like I was going out a lot of the round, I went around the golf course, I kept it in front of me and I never really got out of the position."

Woods hit 11 of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens, often choosing to go to bed instead of throwing bombs into Mexico City. Even if it gave him long strides, it also allowed him to avoid trouble. He had only 26 putts and was fourth in the pack in terms of winning strokes.

A few pauses – the tee shots at the 10th and the first holes bounced off the trees and in the aisles – were nice, and Woods took advantage of his best chances of birdies, scoring six goals against the only bogey of the 17th -… 70 feet.

His best shot of the day did not win him a birdie but was still spectacular after missing the fairway on the ninth of the normal 4, his last hole. Sitting in a bad lie in a fairway bunker, Woods had a tree to bypass and a hairpin cut off the right side. Trying to choose between the clubs, Woods finally chose a 9 iron for shooting 135 yards, then curved it around the tree, on the green, and saw it spin directly towards the pin and stop at 3 meters distance. Her birdie putt ends up finishing the day.

"I opened it [the club] and gave the least possible motion, Woods said. "And it worked."

Woods is taking its first steps in this event since 2014, while it was being played in Miami. He has won seven times at six different locations and it is his first competitive tournament in Mexico. Woods will be 15th on Sunday at the Genesis Open for the third time this year.
