As the investigation into the February 23 Tiger Woods single-car crash continues, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department “Executed a Search Warrant to Obtain Black Box Data in the Car “, according to USA today.
Woods crashed his Genesis SUV just south of Los Angeles in an area of the city where officers say many car accidents occur due to the structure of the road. At the time, LASO said the crash was “purely accidental,” but that was pushed back a bit on Tuesday.
“The sheriff spoke to information known at the time and said it was a traffic accident,” LASO said in a statement. “However, the road collision investigation is (ongoing) and traffic investigators have not reached any conclusions as to the cause of the collision.”
A warrant was obtained to obtain the black box as “a routine part of [the sheriff department’s] “This is done to determine if a crime has been committed,” LASO said. USA today. But because officers determined at the crash scene that there was “no evidence of impairment” as they said last week, Woods’ blood was not drawn at the hospital by the department.
Tiger had no recollection of the events of the morning of February 23, according to an affidavit for a search warrant obtained by USA today, neither at the scene of the accident nor later when he was taken to hospital.
Woods was initially unconscious after the crash in Southern California when a resident found the golfer trapped in a loaner car and with blood on his face and chin, according to the affidavit, which was submitted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Johann Schoegl.
“The deputies asked him how the collision happened” at the scene of the accident, according to the affidavit. “The driver said he didn’t know and didn’t even remember driving… The driver was treated for his injuries in hospital and asked again how the collision happened. reiterated that he did not know and did not remember driving.
Tiger has a history of impaired driving. He was arrested in Florida in 2017 after falling asleep while driving with several drugs in his system. However, it was more or less clear that this was even part of the investigation when officers examined him on the morning of his accident. As USA today noted, there would have to be a probable cause of a crime to obtain medical data now. Getting the black box is a much lower bar at this point (the only probable cause of a crime) and a much more routine part of any investigation.
The path that Woods’ car takes is absolutely terrifying. He crossed a median, went up the street in the wrong direction, passed a huge light pole, and descended into a small ravine on the other side where he tipped over. All without a trace of skid marks or ever hitting the breaks.
The black box information should reveal more of what happened, although only Woods could potentially know the full story. Presumably, LASO will release this information in the coming days, along with a more solid conclusion on what they believe happened. They could also charge Woods with some sort of crime depending on what the black box reveals, although that’s probably not a big deal.
Woods was recently transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where he is undergoing further treatment for several fractures to his right leg and ankle. Tiger was originally transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, which was closer to where his car crash happened. He was treated there for a few days before being transferred to the more private Cedars-Sinai.
His recovery time will be long, and there are questions about his health as a human, not to mention that he will compete as a professional athlete again. Woods appears to be in high spirits after his colleagues paid him tribute last week at the WGC-Workday Championship at The Concession by wearing red and black on Sunday for the final.
